Redesigning the Skittles site was a dream project in many ways - the client gave us full creative freedom to make a site for a product that had no product information at all.

I designed a long rainbow of content - an endlessly scrolling site (before endlessly scrolling sites were a thing) that was filled with bizarre imagery, non sequiturs, and animated gifs that evoked the essence of the Skittles brand. Even the silly copy I put in the original design comps to entertain myself found its way into the final site.

I was encouraged and empowered to get aggressively weird with the content of the site. I made space for ‘intermissions’ along the way down the rainbow scroll - sadly, this one featuring the notorious ‘limobaby’ did not make the final cut.

Back in 2012, to jump on the energy around the inevitable end days, we pitched the idea of making Skittles the official candy of the end of the world. These are some designs for an official END OF THE WORLD app that would release a new game every month to help people prepare for the apocalypse. All of the games made use of the smartphone accelerometer in ways to ensure that people looked insane while playing in public.

We also got to propose new flavors for the green Skittle when they were planning on retiring Lime.

We made tons of games in the early days at Big Spaceship. My favorite one (that we never actually launched) was PERFECT MONKEY TANKPANTS: SEVERITY 2K, a single player shoot-em-up in the style of old arcade games like Smash TV. I collaborated with a team of graffiti artists, 3d designers, sound and music designers, developers, and animators to concept and develop the look & feel, story and gameplay for this frenetic flash game.

In PERFECT MONKEY TANKPANTS: SEVERITY 2K , you actually play a donkey who wears tank treads instead of pants. There are a variety of different weapons to pick up, all stashed away in the fly of your tankpants.

I had about two weeks to bust out out 30 gifs, so using a variety of animation techniques on original video and stills, I went with a internetty look that was a mixture of low-fidelity assets with high-fidelity motion.

“As much as the Internet is about the proliferation of and unprecedented access to all the world’s information, it’s equally about a constant and never-ending hose of face-melting absurdity. The rate at which new memes, fads and cultural moments get created, remixed and then fade away is the truly unstoppable quality of the Internet.”
